Independence Starts District Play with a Victory

The Independence football team started fast Friday and kept on rolling in a 45-10 victory over Liberty at Toyota Stadium.

After opening its season with a one-point loss, Independence has won three straight -- by an average of five touchdowns. Most importantly, Independence started off District 5-5A Division I play with a victory.

Liberty took a 7-0 lead with a touchdown on its first drive, but Independence scored on its first three drives to grab a 21-7 advantage. A touchdown run just before halftime by Logan Brungardt made it 28-7.

Brungardt rushed 21 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns for Independence, while Zy're White rushed eight times for 113 yards and a score. Independence piled up 400 yards rushing in the game.

Independence's defense also made big plays, intercepting two passes, recovering two fumbles and forcing Liberty to punt four times.

Independence next plays on Thursday, Oct. 4, against Heritage. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Toyota Stadium.
