Parity Shows in District Basketball Results

The District basketball season is now about halfway complete, with the girls a week ahead of the boys, and one thing is already certain:

It’s going to be an exciting finish.

The results on Tuesday night gave us a glimpse of that, as six of the 10 varsity games were decided by 10 points or less. Among those close games were two in which teams with a combined 11 District 9-5A losses knocked off a pair of teams that were previously undefeated in district play.

So far this season, 19 of the District 9-5A girls games have been decided by 10 points or less. Among the boys, 18 games have been decided by 10 points or less.

The girls teams have 8 to 10 district games remaining – depending on whether they had games in December rescheduled for COVID reasons – while the boys teams have 10 to 12 district games left.

It should be a fun final month. The top four boys teams and the top four girls teams will earn spots in the playoffs in February. The first round of the girls playoffs is scheduled for Feb. 11-13 and the boys playoffs start a week later.

Here are the District 9-5A standings as of the morning of January 7.
